2025-09-23 Letter to MP Andrew Gwynne - Request for Parliamentary Press Pass for Declassified UK

Dear Andrew Gwynne,

Re: Request for Parliamentary Press Pass for Declassified UK

I am writing as a constituent and a supporter of a free and independent press. I wish to bring to your attention the recent decision by the House of Commons Press Gallery to deny Declassified UK a parliamentary press pass, as reported by the outlet itself (see the article here: https://www.declassifieduk.org/parliament-blocks-declassified-citing-our-gaza-standpoint/).

Declassified UK is a reputable, non‑partisan media organisation that provides investigative reporting and analysis on a range of political and social issues. Its journalists have consistently adhered to professional standards, and the outlet contributes valuable perspectives to public debate.

The stated reason for the refusal appears to be linked to the publication’s coverage of the Gaza conflict. While I understand that the Press Gallery must uphold certain standards of conduct, I am concerned that denying a press pass on the basis of editorial stance risks undermining the principle of press freedom that Parliament traditionally protects. It also sets a precedent whereby media outlets could be excluded for reporting on contentious international matters, which runs counter to the democratic values we cherish.

I respectfully ask you to:

  1. Seek clarification from the Press Gallery Committee regarding the specific criteria used to assess Declassified UK's application and whether those criteria were applied consistently across all applicants.

  2. Advocate for a review of the decision, ensuring that any assessment is based solely on journalistic professionalism, accuracy, and adherence to parliamentary rules—not on the political content of the outlet’s reporting.

  3. Support broader guidance that safeguards the right of legitimate news organisations to obtain press credentials, irrespective of the viewpoints they express, provided they meet established standards of integrity and fairness.

I believe that a transparent, fair process will reinforce confidence in the Press Gallery’s role and demonstrate Parliament’s commitment to a vibrant, pluralistic media landscape.

Thank you for taking the time to consider this matter. I would welcome any update you can provide on actions taken, and I remain at your disposal should you require further information.

Yours sincerely,

Ryan Bestford
